As mentioned during the site visit the homework for this week is to review the Straw-bale house with regard to the 10 Principles of Passive Solar Design. For each of the ten concepts please (briefly) list one thing that the house does well and one that it could do better. Steve Loken will be coming tomorrow evening and I might compose a little quiz about that as well.

Week 8

The Green Building Ratings for your projects are due on Sunday at 5pm. Up til now I’ve been VERY leniant with people handing work in late…but not this time! Results that I receive late will have marks deducted at my discretion.

I don’t want to spend the rest of next week looking at green building rating results so please get them in on time.

Graduates – you are only required to send in one of the results at this time.
javascript:SetCmd(cmdSend);
Send
Everyone – please print your results to a pdf. If you all send them to me as excel spreadsheets my computer will die so pdf’s please. If your computer doesn’t have the ability to print to pdf’s, all of the ones in the lab do so go there. If you don’t know how to print to pdf it’s time you learned. (Hint – tell it to print then choose “Adobe PDF” as the printer then save the file somewhere you can find it again then email it to me).

Remember, I don’t care what score you get when you’re rating your project. I’m interested in what you learn from the process. And don’t get too hung up on anything that you don’t understand. Just make a note of any questions and ask me later.

Week 12

Two items for homework.

1) In one paragraph please briefly describe the process of energy modeling a building.

2) In one page or less please give me your best shot at a POSITIVE view of the future. How can we create a sustainable world?

Please have these to me by 5pm on Sunday.

Week 13

I have reserved the computer lab 240 in the Liberal Arts building for both evenings this week. I expect everyone to come (remember that attendance and participation count for a significant portion of the grade for the semester) and work on your projects. If you are already completely done with your project you can show me what you’ve done and then work on something else. If you’re not finished I will be available to help with whatever you need help with.

The following two weeks you will be presenting your projects to the class who will be grading it for you. We have a LOT of projects to get through so time management will be an important thing, as will making sure that however you intend to present it will actually work. I suggest that you each put your sketchup model, your green building rating(s), and your list of green features on a thumb drive or a CD and test that they will work and be readable on one of the university computers.

Making a succinct and effective presentation is also an important thing to learn how to do. You do not want to get up in front of the class and have nothing to show. You will be embarrassed and you will get a lousy grade for the presentation. Preparation is important so don’t leave it until the last minute and make sure that it will work when the time comes.

In the interests of fairness there will be no set order for the presentations. I will draw names out of a hat so everyone will need to be ready by the end of next week. You will also be glad because it will be one thing you don’t have to work on as you approach finals week.
